CHAPTER TEN

ABBY GLANCED IN HER REARVIEW mirror as she pulled to a stop at a traffic light.

Luke was still there, staying right behind her in his black SUV.

What in the world was she doing, taking him home?

Better still, what had he meant by those things he’d said back at the day care? That he’d felt something he wasn’t ready to feel? They’d only met a week ago. They’d talked, laughed, sat in her kitchen drinking iced tea.

What could he feel for her? What could she feel for him?

Abby’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.

Something. Oh, yes. Something. She knew that, even if she didn’t know exactly what it was or what it meant, and now she was on her way home, with Luke right behind her, and her daughter bouncing with excitement in the back seat.

Abby looked into the mirror.

Being in the close confines of a car with a four-year-old was almost always interesting, especially if the four-year-old in question was as verbal as Emily. Em could happily chatter about the things they saw, the people they passed, the weather, the traffic lights, anything and everything throughout an entire trip.

Not tonight.

Abby took another quick look at her daughter.

Em hadn’t said more than half a dozen words since they’d pulled out of the parking lot. She was too busy craning her neck so she could watch Luke’s car following theirs.

Was she letting her child set herself up for disappointment? As it was, her usually happy little girl had been the very portrait of misery the last couple of days and refused to offer a reason why until finally she’d blurted out that Luke had no time for her anymore.

How much had Em heard of the conversation with Luke just now? How much had she understood? How much could she have understood? Abby was an adult, and she hadn’t understood most of it, not just the things Luke had told her, but her reaction to them.

A sensible woman would have said Yes, really, that’s all fascinating, but you’re wasting your time, Mr. Sloan. You don’t want to get involved with me and a damned good thing, too, because I most certainly don’t want to get involved with you.

The light changed. Abby eased her foot from the brake to the gas pedal and the car moved ahead.

How could you even use a word like involved to describe the relationship she and Luke had? They didn’t have a relationship. She barely knew the man. He’d given her a ride, fixed her car, made her laugh, made Emily laugh, too, and then he’d turned back into the scowling, surly stranger she’d pegged him for the first time she’d laid eyes on him.

Then why was she taking him home for dinner? Because of Em, that was why; to put a smile on Em’s face.

Her daughter had handed her heart to a man who didn’t know what to do with it.

Luckily, her mother wasn’t anywhere near as foolish.

Abby glanced in the mirror again.

“Em?”

Emily looked around. “Yes, Mommy?”

“You don’t have to keep watching Luke,” Abby said gently.
